The Redding City Council has given the mayor authorization to author letters to the Governor, and other legislative bodies in support of the reopening of businesses within the city. State Assembly Woman Meghan Dahle had requested that the Mayor write such a letter to Governor Newsom requesting that he support regional control of the business’ reopening due to the fact that Shasta County and the City of Redding have a much lower rate of infection from COVID-19 than other parts of the state. Mayor Adam McElvain wanted council approval for this letter and others supporting the assemblywoman and the County of Shasta. The letter will also say that the city does realize that a state of emergency exists and recognizes that the situation is fluid, and the city will abide by any state or federal guidelines. But it will say that the city supports the idea of a more regional approach instead of a statewide one-size-fits-all mandate.
