Opinions are abundant concerning the Redding Police Department’s new armored vehicle. It’s called a Lenco Bearcat Rescue Vehicle, and it resembles a tank with wheels instead of tracks. SWAT Team members were at Bethel Church Tuesday morning training and taking pictures with the new rig. It was paid for by Redding Tourism Marketing Group using money collected from the Transient Occupancy Tax, also known as the “Bed Tax” levied on hotel rooms. A number of people have criticized the purchase as an unnecessary militarization of the police department, while others call it an essential defensive tool for officers in an increasingly volatile society. The RPD already had an armored rescue vehicle, but it was almost 20 years old.
