FPPC Opens Investigation Into Organizers Of Recall Effort

The California Fair Political Practices Commission has opened an investigation into the groups working to recall three Shasta County supervisors. The proposed recall targets Leonard Moty, Joe Chimenti and Mary Rickert, accusing them of bowing to the governor’s wishes over the interests of Shasta County citizens, particularly in terms of Coronavirus restrictions. Supervisor Patrick Jones has been working alongside the recall organizers. Earlier this month County Clerk Cathy Darling-Allen noted that those behind the recall effort failed to include enough information in their announcement for the intent to recall. She said the entire process had to be scrapped and started over from the beginning. Soon after that, the group “Shasta Forward”, which opposes the recall, filed complaints of seven separate violations of state campaign laws, mostly centering around the disclosure of the sources of campaign contributions. Shasta Forward and the three targeted supervisors characterize the funding as “dark money”. The group “Red, White and Blueprint” has raised untold amounts of money through fundraising events and large fees charged for pre-screening of their documentaries and for access to their Facebook page. Leaders of the group contend that it’s a media company and not a political organization.
