Many of the evacuations ordered for the Lava Fire in Siskiyou County have been lifted and Highway 97 has reopened. The Lava Fire is still estimated at 25,000 acres. It stretches from the Mount Shasta Vistas in the north to the slopes of Mount Shasta in the south. It’s 72% contained. There’s no information available about structural damage. On Tuesday dozens of members of the Hmong community from the evacuated Mount Shasta Vista Subdivision protested at the Siskiyou County Courthouse in Yreka to voice their concerns about a county ordinance that prohibits the transport of more than 100 gallons of water without a permit. Many of the residents have no water source at home and have to haul in every drop they need. The law was passed in an effort to thwart cannabis growers but residents say they need water to live and the ordinance is a cruel burden and proved dangerous when the Lava Fire swept into their midst and they had no water to fight it.
25 miles up Highway 97 from the Lava Fire is the Tennant Fire, estimated at 10,614 acres with 71% containment.
