A large fire in South Redding that broke out Saturday morning is still under investigation, and Redding Fire Department would like help in identifying a cause. It’s not been determined whether the fire started in some woods near the end of El Reno Lane and spread up the hill to Memory Lane off Riviera, or if it started at the house and spread to vegetation. A large house at the end of Memory Lane was completely destroyed. As the flames consumed the house, a big propane tank beneath the rear deck exploded and witnesses told us it blew the deck a hundred feet in the air. Another house next door sustained about 50% damage. Four vehicles were also destroyed. The value of the loss is estimated at $800,000. The vegetation fire was held to about 4 acres. Redding Fire was assisted by engine crews who were in the area for the Monument Fire, as well as a couple of bombers making retardant drops and a helicopter that dumped multiple bucket loads of water on the fire.
