Highway 44 was blocked near Shingletown for an extended time on Christmas Day after a head-on collision. Shortly after One O’clock, a Toyota Camry collided with a Prius in the ice and snow near Miller Ranch Road. The Prius left the road and went down an embankment, while the Camry remained high-centered on the guard rail. There were a total of 5 patients, including at least two with major injuries and one who was airlifted to Mercy Hospital with critical injuries. The highway was totally blocked for a while, and then eastbound traffic was detoured onto a frontage road for more than two hours while the difficult task of recovering the cars was done.
