4 Positive Omicron Tests Reported In Shasta County

The Omnicron variant of Covid has arrived in Shasta County. The highly contagious strain was detected in four tests taken on December 16th. Due to a decline in new daily cases, Shasta County Public Health will cut back from daily reports to twice-weekly reports starting next week. No new deaths were reported Wednesday, though ten were reported the previous day. There have been 144 Covid fatalities in the past three months. Only 15 of them had been fully vaccinated, and nine of those had received their last dose more than 6 months prior to becoming ill. 50 new cases were reported Wednesday. There are 146 known active cases in Shasta County, 45 are hospitalized, and 15 are in the ICU. The state is requiring masks for all indoor public places, regardless of vaccination status. A vaccination clinic will take place Thursday from 10AM to 4:30PM at the First United Methodist Church at South and East Streets in Downtown Redding. All vaccines and boosters will be available. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Information on free testing or vaccination options can be found at shastaready.org.
