DA Clears Officers In Fatal Shooting At Discovery Village In December Of 2020

Redding Police have been cleared of blame by District Attorney Stephanie Bridgett for shooting a woman who pinned an officer’s leg under her car. 62-year-old Dolores Hernandez was killed on December 2nd of 2020. She had been yelling and cursing at customers and management inside Mod Pizza in the Discovery Village Shopping Center on Dana Drive. She eventually went outside and spent another 20 minutes or so yelling at people in the parking lot, including a security guard who was trying to convince her to leave. When officers arrived Hernandez was sitting in her Toyota Camry. She refused to provide her drivers license and told an officer that they were all murderers and they would be brought to justice in the name of Jesus Christ. As two officers were talking to her she put her car in reverse and started backing up. They were going to let her leave but she then went forward, nearly hitting an officer, who started striking the side window with his baton. That’s when Hernandez turned the wheel sharply and knocked the officer down, backing the front wheel over the officer’s legs and pinning him in place. The other officer tried to pop the rear tire with a knife, then pulled his gun and fired 7 shots into the driver’s side window, killing Hernandez. The injured officer was treated at a hospital and released. The deadly force was ruled justified.
