Should the City of Redding Clerk and Treasurer be elected positions, as they are currently, or should they be appointed? That’s a question that may appear on the ballot in November if the City Council decides that way Tuesday evening. The only requirements to run for the positions are that someone live in the city, be registered to vote in the city and be at least 18-years-old. The trouble is, these positions have became much more technical and mistakes due to lack of experience or ability could open the city to serious liability or loss of money. More than 75% of general law cities in California appoint their City Clerks and 52% appoint their Treasurer. If the council approves Tuesday, and voters approve in November, the positions would be filled through a competitive recruitment process according to skills and qualifications.
