After spending this weekend barbecuing and boating and having fun, Monday may be best spent remembering the reason for the holiday. There will be no ceremony this year at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery in Igo, and the ceremony at Redding Memorial Park near Downtown Redding will only be on Facebook Live. However, the official City of Redding and Shasta County Veterans Memorial Day Service will be Monday at 11AM at the Veterans Memorial Grove in front of the Civic Auditorium. Many veterans groups will attend and those who wish to lay wreaths will be invited to participate by calling Shasta County Veterans Services Officer Celestina Traver at 225-5616. Lunch will be served. Attendees are encouraged to bring umbrellas for shade. Another ceremony will take place at the Anderson Cemetery hosted by the VFW at 11AM Monday. Memorial Day has its roots in 1868 as a remembrance of Civil War dead. While Veterans Day in November is to honor all military personnel, Memorial Day is generally reserved for the fallen.
