An Oregon man vacationing at Lake Shasta met with tragedy over the weekend. The 44-year-old man from Portland was with a church group visiting the Hirz Bay area on the McCloud Arm of the lake. Saturday afternoon the man grabbed a plastic pool-type flotation tube and went into the water. He was not wearing a life jacket. While paddling to reach some other members of his group, he fell into the water. He tried to get a grip on the tube but could not and began going underwater. After few tries, he did not resurface. Other members of his group tried to rescue him from the murky waters but it was 5 to 7 minutes before they were able to find him and get him to shore. CPR was attempted by bystanders, as well as by arriving EMT’s who also tried a Defibrillator, but he could not be revived.
