A Red Bluff man who subjected his wife to repeated savage beatings has been given a much shorter sentence than prosecutors had sought. 44-year-old James Lister had kicked in a door, injuring the victim’s finger, then spit in her face, shoved her and threatened to beat her face in. The woman was opposed to prosecution but the court issued a “no negative contact” order. In a subsequent incident, Lister took his wife’s cell phone and smashed it on the ground. He then went to her son’s room and roughed him up before returning to his wife. He slammed her against a wall, shoved her down, jerked her back up by her hair and slammed her down again before kicking her in the back, stomach and groin. She suffered numerous bruises and scrapes but was still opposed to prosecution. The DA’s Office argued for prison, but a nearly-5-year prison sentence was suspended in lieu of 6 months in county jail and participation in behavioral health court.
